Introduction
After downloading the osFinancials software, you may proceed to install the software. After double-clicking on the installation file, the similar screens as displayed in this documentation, will be displayed on your system.
Before this installation process is explained in detail, we would like to introduce you to the osFinancials support team, which you may contact via e-mail at Support at osFinancials or via the osFinancials Skype name.
The Installation process consists of 3 basic steps:
- Installation of the osFinancials program http://www.osfinancials.org
- Installation of the Firebird Database Engine http://www.firebirdsql.org
- Installation of FlameRobin Database Admin Software http://www.flamerobin.org

Download osFinancials Accounting Software
To Download osFinancials
- Visit our webpage http://www.osfinancials.org and click on the download stable version. The project page of osFinancials at sourceforge will be displayed. You may also visit our project page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/osfinancials.
- Select a file to download. A confirmation message to save the file will be displayed by your Web Browser. Select to save the file on disk.

Installing osFinancials Accounting Software
To Installing osFinancials Accounting Software
- Once the osFinancials installation file is downloaded, select the file and open it. The Select Setup Language screen is displayed:
- Select your language and click on the OK button. The Welcome to the osFinancials Setup Wizard screen is displayed:
- Click on the Next button. The License Agreement screen is displayed:
- Please read the agreement carefully. If you agree with the terms and conditions of the license agreement, select the I accept the agreement option and click on the Next button. The Select Destination Location screen is displayed:
- The default path is osFinancials on your system's default drive, (e.g. C:/osFinancials).
You may click on the Browse button to select any other folder than the default path where you wish to install osFinancials on the Browse for Folder screen.
- Once finished, click on the Next button. The Select Components screen is displayed:
- A list of the components will be displayed. Select or deselect (remove the tick) for the following options, if necessary:
- Install Firebird Database Server (Needed to run osFinancials local) - If you are installing osFinancials for the first time, you need to make sure that this option is selected.
- Install FlameRobin SQL Browser Type - This will install the FlameRobin Database Admin software to manage your osFinancials databases (Sets of Books). The FlameRobin software is used to browse, check and edit data. The installation of FlameRobin is optional and is not required to run osFinancials. The use of FlameRobin is not recommended for users which have insufficient knowledge and expertise.
- Install Excel Plugin - This will install the a plug-in to manage data in the Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets.
- Select Examples - These examples are fully functional Sets of Books (templates) which have been customised and preset for the respective legislation applicable to different countries. It is recommended that you select the examples applicable to your country. You may use one of these Example Sets of Books to create your own Set of Books.
If you have already installed osFinancials on your system, you may select to install Firebird as well as FlameRobin again. You should note that the Firebird Servers is not running when installing it again.
- Once finished, selecting the components to be installed, click on the Next button. The Select Start Menu Folder screen is displayed:
- The default name for the Start Menu Folder is osFinancials. You may over type this with your own description, if necessary. This will create an item on the Start→Programs menu list with items for Convert tc 3books, Convert tc 4 books, osFinancials, Uninstall osFinancials on your Windows™ Taskbar.
- Once finished, click on the Next button. The Select Additional Tasks screen is displayed:
- By default no options are selected. Select the following options, if you wish them to be installed:
- Create desktop icon - This will create an icon on your desktop from where you may start or launch the osFinancials program
- Create Quick Launch icon - This will create an icon on your Quick Launch Toolbar on your Windows™ Taskbar. You may then start or launch the osFinancials program directly from the Quick Launch Toolbar.
- Once finished, click on the Next button. The Ready to Install screen is displayed:
- Please check the following selections to be installed:
- Destination Location
- Setup Type
- Selected Components
- Start Menu Folder
- Additional Tasks (icons)
This is your last chance to change anything to be installed. If you are not satisfied with the selections, click on the Back buttons to select or deselect the necessary options.
- Click on the Install button. The osFinancials installation process will start. Once the osFinancials installation process is finished, the Completing the osFinancials Setup Wizard screen is displayed:
- Please select or deselect the following options to be installed or launched:
- Install Firebird - Select to install the Firebird Database Engine.
The Firebird Database Engine is required to run osFinancials local - If you are installing osFinancials for the first time, you need to make sure that this option is selected.
- Install FlameRobin - Select to install the FlameRobin Database Admin Software. The FlameRobin Database Admin Software is used to manage your osFinancials databases (Sets of Books). The FlameRobin software is used to browse, check and edit data. The installation of FlameRobin is optional and is not required to run osFinancials. The use of FlameRobin is not recommended for users which have insufficient knowledge and expertise.
- Launch Conversion TC3 - You may select this option, if you already have Sets of Books in TurboCASH 3.xxx on your system. You may also access the Convert from TurboCASH 3 to osFinancials 1 option on the Creation Wizard on the File→Create Set of Books option.
If you are starting to use osFinancials for the first time, and do not have any TurboCASH 3.xxx Sets of Books on your system, deselect this option. - Launch Conversion TC4 - You may select this option, if you already have Sets of Books in TurboCASH 4.xxx on your system. You may also access the Convert from TurboCASH 4 to osFinancials 1 option on the Creation Wizard on the File→Create Set of Books option.
If you are starting to use osFinancials for the first time, and do not have any TurboCASH 4.xxx Sets of Books on your system, deselect this option. - Launch osFinancials - If this option is selected, the osFinancials program will automatically be launched.
If you do not select this option, you may then launch or start osFinancials from the following options (if selected or where specified: - - Desktop icon.
- Quick Launch icon (on the Quick Launch Toolbar on your Windows™ Taskbar).
- Start→Programs→osFinancials menu from the Windows™ Taskbar.
- Once finished selecting or deselecting the necessary options, click on the Finish button.
Depending on your selection, the Firebird database engine and / or the FlameRobin Database Admin will automatically start installing. After these installation processes, the Launch Conversion TC3 and / or Conversion TC4 and / or Launch osFinancials were selected, these programs will also be launched.

Installing Firebird
It is recommended that you install this Firebird version 1.5, if you have older versions of the Firebird Database Server installed on your system.
To Install the Firebird Database Server:
- If you have selected the Install Firebird option on the Completing the osFinancials Setup Wizard screen, the installation of Firebird will start automatically. The Select Setup Language screen is displayed:
The Setup Language for Firebird is only available in English, German, French and Portuguese. It is recommended that you select the English option, unless you install osFinancials in one of these three other languages. - Click on the OK button. The Welcome to the Firebird Database Server 1.5 Setup Wizard screen is displayed:
- Click on the Next button. The License Agreement screen is displayed:
- Please read the agreement carefully. If you agree with the terms and conditions of the license agreement, select the I accept the agreement option and click on the Next button. The Information screen is displayed:
- Please read the information carefully. When finished, click on the Next button. The Select Destination Folder screen is displayed:
- This will by default install Firebird_1_5 in the Firebird directory in the Program Folder on your system's default drive, (e.g. C:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_1_5).
You may click on the Browse button to select any other folder than the default path where you wish to install Firebird on the Browse for Folder screen.
This will create an item on the Start→Programs→Firebird 1.5 menu list with items for the following on your Windows™ Taskbar. - Firebird 1.5 Quick Start Guide - To launch an e-book (PDF) quick start quide.
- Firebird 1.5.3 Release Notes - To view the read me file.
- Firebird Guardian - To launch (start) the Firebird Guardian.
- Firebird ISQL Tool - To launch (start) the Firebird ISQL tool.
- Uninstall Firebird - To Uninstall Firebird and all its components from your system.
If you select the Don't Create a Start Menu Folder option, you will not be able to access it from the Start→Programs menu list. - When finished, click on the Next button. The Select Components screen is displayed:
- The Full installation of Super Server and development tools as the default option will be displayed. Advanced users, may select the following options:
- Full installation of Super Server and development tools - The Super Server binary, Server Components, Developer and admin tools components as well as Client components will be installed.
This is the default option and is recommended for most users. - Full installation of Classic Server and development tools - The Classic Server binary, Server Components, Developer and admin tools components as well as Client components will be installed.
- Installation of Client tools for Developers and database administrators - The Classic Server binary, Developer and admin tools components as well as Client components will be installed.
- Minimum client install - no server, no tools - The Classic Server binary, Client components will be installed.
- Custom installation - If you change any options from Super Server binary to Classic server binary or deselect or select any other available options, Custom installation will be displayed.
- Client components - cannot be selected and will install by default.
- Please read the information carefully. When finished, click on the Next button. The Select Start Menu Folder screen is displayed:
- This will by default install Firebird_1_5 in the Firebird directory in the Program Folder on your system's default drive, (e.g. C:\Program Files\Firebird\Firebird_1_5).
You may click on the Browse button to select any other folder than the default path where you wish to install Firebird on the Browse for Folder screen. - If you do not wish to create icons for the Firebird Database Server, select the Don't create any icons option. When finished, click on the Next button. The Select Additional Tasks screen is displayed:
- Select the additional tasks you would like Setup to perform while installing Firebird Database Server 1.5:
- Use Guardian to Control the Server - This will run the Guardian. It is a program that checks to see if your database is still running. If not, it will fire up the database, thus making sure it is always available.
- Run Firebird as an Application - You can run Firebird as a application to control when Firebird is started.
- Run Firebird as a Service - If you want to be lazy, select this option. It will boot Firebird when your machine does. Also needed to install Firebird on a server so its always on.
- Start Firebird as automatically when you boot up? - If you select Firebird as a application we can still place a shortcut in your Start->Programs to auto start the Guardian which starts Firebird.
- Copy Firebird client library to system directory? - The Firebird DLL will be copied so any application can find it.
- Generate client library as GDS32.DLL for legacy application support? - To provide backwards compatibility with Interbase. This option allows to create a Firebird DLL that is named like the Interbase DLL. Any application that uses Interbase can use thisi new library with Firebird. (Please tick this option).
- Install Control Panel Applet? - To install the Control Panel in your configuration screen so you can start / stop or check the server.
- When finished, click on the Next button. The Ready to Install screen is displayed:
- Please check your options carefully. When finished, click on the Install button. The Information screen is displayed:
- Please read the information carefully. When finished, click on the Next button. The Completing the Firebird Database Server 1.5 Setup Wizard screen is displayed:
- Select the Start Firebird Service now option to start the Database engine and click on the Finish button.

Installing FlameRobin
To Install the FlameRobin Database Admin Software:
- If you have selected the Install FlameRobin option on the Completing the osFinancials Setup Wizard screen, the installation of FlameRobin will start automatically. The Welcome to the FlameRobin Setup Wizard screen is displayed:
- Click on the Next button. The License Agreement screen is displayed:
- Please read the agreement carefully. If you agree with the terms and conditions of the license agreement, select the I accept the agreement option and click on the Next button. The Select Destination Location screen is displayed:
- This will by default install FlameRobin the Program Folder on your system's default drive, (e.g. C:\Program Files\FlameRobin).
You may click on the Browse button to select any other folder than the default path where you wish to install FlameRobin on the Browse for Folder screen.
- When finished, click on the Next button. The Select Start Menu Folder screen is displayed:
- The default name for the Start Menu Folder is FlameRobin. You may over type this with your own description, if necessary. This will create an item on the Start→Programs→FlameRobin menu list with items for the following on your Windows™ Taskbar.
- FlameRobin - To launch (start) FlameRobin Database Admin Software.
- FlameRobin on the Web - To visit the http://www.flamerobin.org.
- License - To view the license agreement (installed on your hard drive). (This can also be accessed on the Help menu of the FlameRobin Database Admin software).
- Manual - To view the FlameRobin Manual (installed on your hard drive). (This can also be accessed on the Help menu of the FlameRobin Database Admin software).
- Uninstall FlameRobin - To Uninstall FlameRobin and all its components from your system.
- What's New - To view the What's New features of FlameRobin (installed on your hard drive). (This can also be accessed on the Help menu of the FlameRobin Database Admin software).

- Select the following options to launch:
- Launch FlameRobin
- Show Release Notes - This will display the release notes, changes, etc. (installed on your hard drive) in your system's default web browser.
- Click on the Finish button. The FlameRobin Database Admin tool will be launched.

Convert TurboCASH 3 Books
The conversion process for TurboCASH version3.xxx Set of Books will automatically convert the entire Set of Books database from the Borland Database Engine to the Firebird Database Engine.
To Convert TurboCASH 3 Sets of Books to osFinancials:
- If you have selected the Launch Conversion TC3 option on the Completing the osFinancials Setup Wizard screen, the conversion tool will be launched automatically. The TC3 to osFinancials screen is displayed:
You may also access the Convert from TurboCASH 3 to osFinancials 1 option on the Creation Wizard on the File→Create Set of Books option.
- Select the Copy Reports option to include the reports in the Bin/Reports directory of TurboCASH in the conversion process.
- Your TurboCASH 3 Folder - The default is tcash3 of your systems default drive. If this is not correct, then you need to specify the location if your TurboCASH 4 Sets of Books.
- Click on the Scan for books in TC 3 button. The screen will change to the following:
- A list of all the available TurboCASH 3 Sets of Books will be listed. Click on the Convert button to start the conversion process.
- Select the Sets of Books to be converted and click on the Convert button to start the conversion process.
- Once the conversion process is finished, the screen will change to the following:
- Once finished with the conversion, close or exit the TC3 to osFinancials screen.
- You may start to work in osFinancials and open any of these converted Sets of Books in the File→Open Set of Books option.

Convert TurboCASH 4 Books
The conversion process for TurboCASH version4.xxx Set of Books will automatically convert the entire Set of Books database from the Firtebird Database Engine in TruboCASH to the Firebird Database Engine in osFinancials. The process is basically the same as described for TurboCASH version3.xxx
If you have selected the Launch Conversion TC4 option on the Completing the osFinancials Setup Wizard screen, the conversion tool will be launched automatically. The TC4 to osFinancials screen will be displayed:
